Yet another Ipswich player to join on loan

January 6, 2010

Last season we had Dean Bowditch, Jordan Rhodes and Billy Clarke, recently we borrowed Pim Balkestein, and now it seems that Tommy Smith, a 19-year-old New Zealand international defender, is set to follow in so many of his teammates’ footsteps and make a temporary switch from Portman Road to Griffin Park. Or at least he is if the Green’Un24 website is to be believed (and why wouldn’t it, even if the article is mainly about why he chose to play for New Zealand?).

Interestingly enough, Wikipedia says that Smith can play at either centre back or left back. Call me suspicious, but seeing as Ryan Dickson is out of contract in the summer and has been attracting interest from other clubs due to being the best left back in League One, maybe he’s on his way out and Smith is coming in to fill the gap Ryan would leave? Or maybe I’m just being too clever and he’s just here to replace Balkestein in the centre of defence? As ever, we shall wait and see.

UPDATE: The club have now confirmed that Tommy has indeed joined on loan, initially for a month. Welcome aboard!

Incidentally, I thought I’d point out that Football Rumours seems to have stopped telling us that someone’s mum’s friend’s work colleague who knows Ken Dodd’s dad’s dog says that Steven Gerrard is definitely going to Real Madrid for £5.4 billion and other obviously false nonsense to report on several definitely true Brentford related stories. As such, I wish Danny Foster all the best at Arsenal, congratulate Lewis Price on his £100k move to Derby, and welcome Paul Brooker back to the club in his new player/coach/captain/chairman/Buzz Bee/turnstile operator role.
